NOTES AND COMMENTS (BY "SIR tAACELOT.") Mi 1 . J. 0. Hayward, of the Wairarapa, who imported Soult and Gold Reef to the Dominion, was among the buyers at the Newmarket July sales. It is reported that ho purchased a blood mare and the stallion Lucullus, by Ard Patrick (winner of the Derby), a grandson of St. Simon. Silver Monarch disappointed his connections at Marton, Since 'he returned from there the gelding has been physicked and will not be taken to Dannevirke. The Taranaki-owned Di Gama scored his second success in Victoria in the Heafcherlea Handicap, nine furlongs, at Caulfield pn Saturday. He defeated a good field, which included the Caulfield Cup candidate Anna Carlovna, in good time. Di Gama was not engaged in the big spaing handicaps. Although he suffered defeat, in the first three races he started in, he is making good now. He is trained by G. Delaney at Caulfield. New York (by Frisco), a place-getter in the Electric Hack Handicap at Marton on Wednesday. ,_ scored in a 'hack race at the Rangitikei Hunt Club's meeting the following day. He is trained by J. Coyle. and is a stable mate of Awahou and Master Lupin. New York was ridden by D. Leslie, who was with J. H, Prosser at Porirua for some time. He 19 twenty-four of age, and- is only about 7st. He is now with J. Coyle. Melologue (Advance—Epilogue) acted as runner-up to New York, and scored in the Welter Hack Handicap later in day. G. Scobie was unable^to secure space on the Ulimaroa for the members of Mr. Harvey Patterson's team, which it was intended should be raced at the A.J.C. Spring Meeting, which opens on 3rd October. As the delay will hardly leave sufficient time for the horses to get ac« climatised i before they will have to race at Randwick, probably the trip will be abandoned. Fabrikoff and Atheldana are among those that made the first payment for the New Zealand Cup. J. W. Lowe informed me on Saturday that he could not say whether Want would fulHl his engagement in the Avondale Guineas. The colt had been en* gaged at Wanganui, and might go there. Top Note (San Fran— Lady Bevys), formerly trained at Masterton, who changed hands at the Grand National Meeting, scored her first win for her new owner at the Dunedin Hunt Club's Meeting on Saturday. * In the absence of Mr. J. G. Wilson (president of the club), Mr. &._ Ald« worth, sen., presented the trophies to the winners in the Ladies' Bracelet at the Eangitikei Hunt Club's 'Meeting. Mr. J. Northcote, In thanking the club for the bracelet, brought down the house by saying that if the British beat the Germans as easily as General Webb beat the other horses the war would soon end. Grit Lawless may not be sent through to Dannevirke. Flagfall (Bezonian — Fleetfoot) was among the unsuccessful competitors in the Maiden Hack Plate at Marton. Lesso got into one of the fences at Trentham on Saturday morning, and turned a sonwsault. He did a circuit afterwards, and * appeared to show no ill effects of the fall. H. Thompson, who was in the saddle, was wearing a skull cap, and escaped injury. The Masterton Racing Club is having a set of new saddle-cloths made for the forthcoming meeting. They are whit© figures on a black ground, the same as are in use at Trentham. J. W. Lowe's stable shelters. Kilrain, and Want (top and bottom weights in the New Zealand Cup). The only other local horse engaged in the race is Bonmania. Eosebltish (Stepson— Forest Rose) won the Hunters' Hurdles at the Rangitikei Hunt Club's Meet'ng. Soporific (LetheCharlatan), who finished third, won the Hack Steeplechase later in the afternoon. Soporific was formerly trained by C. Pritchard at the Hutt. . The acceptances received for the New Zealand Cup include Sinapis and Sea Pink, who fought out the finish last November. Piiro Atn was started twice a* thg I^Rangitikei Hunt Club's Meeting. In the Licensed Victuallers' Steeplechase his rider tried to get up on the inside, and this cost him the race. In the View Halloa Steeplechase he looked all over a winner, when he came, to grief six furlongs from home. The race was won by Carronade (Musketry— Natator mare). Charlerose is to be sent to the Dannevirke meeting. He has been galloping well, and will be ridden by A. Read. Columbus and Charlerose are each engaged in two events at Dannevirke on Wednesday, viz., Umutaoroa Hack Handicap, seven furlongs, and Trial Stakes, weight 8.7, six furlongs. General Webb and Soporific, winners at the Hangitikei Hunt Club's meeting, arc engaged in the Hack Steeplechase- at Dannevirke. The New Zealand Cup candidates Montana, Columbus, Peroneal, Football, Indigo, and Elevate arc engaged at Dannevirke. The departure of R. Berry for Sydney on Friday last means that his services will not bo available for Football aaid Steinhall at Dannevirke. We were advised by cable recently of the retirement of Carbine's best grandson, Trafalgar. , Referring to this tho Australasian reports : — The effort to give Trafalgar a preparation with .1 view to his racing again has not proved successful. He entered the stable of his old trainer, W. 8. Hickenbotham, at Flemington, some time back, and was going so well in his work that strong hopes were entertained that he would before long bo in a condition to do himself something like justice 0:1 the turf. After working on Saturday, however. Trafalgar's near foreleg — the one that was troublesome when the chestnut wae previously in training— filled, and Hickenbotham states that the horse is not to bo further perservercd with. It may be taken for granted, therefore, that Trafalgar has definitely retired from the turf. There have been a few instances of horses, after retiring to tho stud, return- |

ing to the racecourse and winning races, but unfortunately for his owners, Messrs. P. and W. Mitchell. Trafalgar cannot be included amongst them. Racing men generally were looking forward to Beeing Trafalgar racing again iv weight-for-age events, and had he Btood a preparation he would doubtless have won his shade of laces, as it cannpt be said that there is at present any weight-for-age performer of note standing out. Despite his failure to "come back," Trafalgar leaves the turf with a splendid record. Only one horse won more money in stakes in Australia, viz., Carbine. A comparison of the records of the two horses may not be out of place : — t
