The discussion in local Liberal and Labour circles to-day mainly concerned the eilect of the Lyttelton contest on tho relations of tho parties. It appears to bo felt generally that yesterday's split in the Liberal party will not be easily healed, and may be indication of a lino of cleavage likely to bo followed next year. The strike had considerable inlluence on the result, undoubtedly, but the broad fact is that the Radical Liberals voted Labour, wTiue the Moderate Liberals voted Reform. Much feeling has been aroused between the two sections, Australian precedent in tho matter of new party divisions being quoted freely. Liberalism locally is practically without organisation, but an attempt will bo made now to provide a body capable of bargaining with tho Social Democrats in connection with next year's contest. All this is in the air at present, but it is evident the Liberals regard the division iv their party yesterday with gravo concern.
