POLICE PREPARED

ARRANGEMENTS FOR SPECIAL CONSTABLES The applications to be enrolled as special constables are still freely coming in from all parts of th© city and the ' country, but so far none have actually been sworn in by the police authorities, who are cpnfident of being able to deal with any emergency that may arise. They are purposely avoiding anything that can possibly be said to be provocative action, but if the strikers imagine that the police are unprepared for emergencies they are making a very grave mistake. Contingents of police 'are distributed all round the water front. Whilst there may not be many constables at the entrance to the Queen's Wharf, or at any given point, there is a large number of men within hail, and they can be brought to a given spot in a few minutes whenever they are urgently required. Mounted men are at all times in readiness, and some have lately been drafted in from the country. Of course the police have a large area to look after besides the wharves. It may be taken for granted that the police will act wherever they consider I a real necessity arises, but that action must be determined by circumstances. At the present time they are not pre- I pared to show their hand. "But all necessary precautions are being taken," a reporter of The Post was assured this morning.
