AN APPEAL-WITH OMISSIONS MANIFESTO BY STRIKERS

In an effort to gain the sympathy of the public the Waterside Workers' Union has issued a leaflet, on which axe the following statements, with others : — "4. In Wellington, the shipwrights decided to join the watersiders. The watersiders decided to so unite with the shipwrights and all together to join hands with the United Federation of Labour and the Social Democratic Party. "5. The exploiters interfered to prevent this consolidation of the unions. They refused to permit the consolidated watersiders to speak in behalf of the .shipwrights. The watersiders called a meeting to consider the situation. The exploiters tore up their agreement with the watersiders, and have refused any further recognition of the Watersiders' Union on any terms whatever. "6. The watersiders were ready, and are still ready, to continue work tinder the agreement as it stood. It was the exploiters who tore up the agreement and demanded that no consolidation of these workers should be permitted, and xoially, that no union at all shall exist unless it be a new union to be created { under forms to be dictated by the exploiters." Clause 5 is remarkable for some omissions. There is a considerable hiatus between "meeting to consider the situation," and ''the exploiters, etc." It is not mentioned that the meeting was arranged for 8 a.m. on Wednesday, in a manner by which the agreement was broken. From statements made by the employers, their willingness to recognise the union depends on the willingness of the union to enter inlo some kind of contract to abide by the signed terms. In clause 6 it is alleged that the "watersiders were ready and are still ready to continue work.*' Were they ready at 8 a.m. on Wednesday? The call of the employers at that hour drew no response. / SHIPOWNERS' MEETING Shipowners are now meeting discussing nest course of action, ac Tlia Pott, Saacft-tCLjixefißA , *~ *
