The steamer .State of California, 2268 tons, wrecked on uncharted rocks near Cambier Bay, Juneau, Alaska, with considerable loss of life, hit the rocks when she was travelling at full speed. The greater portion of th© bottom of the vessel was torn, and she sank in a few minutes. Forty of the crew and forty-three passengers escaped in the boats. Although it was daylight, the vessel sank too quickly to allow of many rescues.
