CIVIC AFFAIRS MEETING OF CITY COUNCIL

COMMITTEE REPORTS. The City Council held its fortnightly meeting last evening. The Mayor (MrD. M'Laren) presided, and the council was represented by Councillors Fletcher, Shirtcliffe, Tregear, Fuller, Barber, Godber, Atkinson, Trevor. Frost, Cohen, Smith, Cameron, and M'Kenaie. < On the recommendation of the Finance Committee, it was decided: That the Union Steam Ship Company should be granted a refund of the sum of £8 14s 2d, being the proportion paid in excess by them for a packet license for the s.s. Rotoitij that an application for a tenancy of a whare at the Island Bay foreshore, recently" purchased, from Mr. G. H. Bay lie, be refused, and that instructions be issued for the demolition of the whare as not habitable. The City Engineer was authorised to take steps to prevent the lighting of fires on the Karori catchment area. The Finance Committee reported that the City Engineer had intimated that he has held an enquiry into the question of the working conditions of the destructor. Of the ten matters in dispute, eight have been settled, and the remaining two are being enquired into further, and the result will be reported later. BY<LAWS. The By-laws Committee reported, recommending that permission to make alterations and additions to the Hotel Cecil be "ranted conditionally; that the taxi-cab proprietors who have been granted the use of telephones on public streets be informed that, at the expiration of the year for which the telephones have been paid for by the contributors, a renewal will not 1 be" pef'mitte'd unless each telephone on each stand is equally available for all persons using the stand, and that it will be necessary for them to co-operate, as recommended by the City Engineer. The report was adopted. POWER STATIONS AND TRAM- ■ WAYS. On the recommendation of the Power Stations and Tramway Committee, it was resolved : — That the Kelburne and Karori Tramway Company be informed that the council cannot see its way to grant them an electrical, power supply for their tramway at present. That the Hataitai Municipal Electors' Association be informed, in reply to letter with respect to alleged overcrowding on the Kilbirnie cars, that the council cannot see its way to make any alteration in the service at present. That the salary of the Electrical Engineer be charged half to the Tramways Department and half to the Lighting Department, instead of, as at present, wholly to tramways. That the Miramar Borough Council be informed, in reply to its enquiry as to what facilities can be granted it to deliver material from the Miramar wharf by means of freight cars running over the tramway lines, that the whole matter is at present under consideration, and that no information can be supplied with regard to same at present. An amendment by Councillor Barber to make retrospective the charge oh the Electric Lighting Department for the ' Engineer's salary did not find a seconder. The Libraries Committee reported the receipt of a redblution from the Timaru Borough Council^ conveying thanks for Mr. Baillle's visit to Timaru to' inspect and report on the library. , ' RESERVES. . The Reserves Committee recommend.cd : — That the Maranui Serf Club and custodian of the Lyall Bay beach be informed, in reply to their "applications for -sur/plies* of gas to their respective sheds, that the council have no objection to the applicants installing the supplies themselves, subject to the gas being paid.for by ..the users. That the Brooklyn 'Cricket Club be informed that the council cannot undertake to prepare the club a wickefc oh the Tanera-crescent ' .Town Belt Reserve, but the club will be allowed to prepare its own wicket. That the application of an expressman for the right to use a paddock adjoining the Bell-road reservoir, or, as an alternative, -the use of Jam Tin Gully for grazing purposes, be not entertained. ■ Tho recommendations were adopted.
