LABOUR'S DEMANDS
CHRISTCHURCH TRAM WAY MEN'S ULTIMATUM SEVEN DAYS ALLOWED [BI TJtt,BGEAPH— SPECIAL TO THI FOST.j CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The decision of the tranvwaymen to present an ultimatum to the Tramway Board has aroused a great amount of surprise locally. It has been known that there was discontent in the service, but the extent of it had not been realised. The trouble has arisen largely from the board's method of treating its "spares." The men who form this group often have to be in attendance for fifteen or sixteen hours a day in order to secure six and a half hours' work, which is paid for at the rate of lid per hour. In Wellington, Auckland, and Dunedin the spares are given a minimum of eight hours. The local demand is for a similar tnipimnm, the time to be given within a twelve hours day or overtime paid for time outside the twelve hours. > If the board does not grant this demand and other claims by making alterations in its roster within seven days, the men will hold a mass meeting at two o'clock on the afternoon, of Monday, 21th June, all traffic being suspended for that purpose.
