The Prime Minister (Hon T. Mackenzie) left for the Auckland district by the Main Trunk express to-day. He will be absent from Wellington for about a week. Mr. W. M'Lennan has been reappuinted one of the Government TepreMsitatives on the "Wellington Land lioard. Inspector Dwyer, of Napier, passed through Wellington to-day on transfer and promotion to Dunedin. The Hon. W. I). S. Mac Donald re» returned to Wellington from the North yesterday afternoon, and left for the South in the evening. Major F. Stuckey, of King's College Cadets, Auckland, has been selected to command the contingent of New Zealand Cadets that is going to Canada. Mr. AI. E. Denniston has received a telegram, stating that his cousin, Mr. Keynolds Denniston, whose serious illness was reported yesterday, is now out of danger. During the absence of Senor Bustamente in South America, for -which part of the world he leaves this afternoon, Mr. W. J. Prouse, of Wellington, will act as Consul in New Zealand for Urnguay. ■ Mr. Frank E. Kelly, LL.D., late of the Supreme Court office staff, was admitted as a barrister and solicitor today by the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout), on the motion of Mr. J. W. Alacdonald, solicitor to the Public Trustee. The Right Hon. James Bryce and Mrs Bryce will leave for the South tonight, and will visit the Cold Lakes and the Otira and Buller Gorged before returning to Wellington on Wednesday, the 26th inst. On the 28th they will leave for Sydney. Mr. E. T. Sadd, who has been appointed Commissioner of Crown Lands and Chief Surveyor for the Hawkes BayPoverty Bay district, left Wellington today to take up his new duties. Ho will return to Nelson in about a week's time to wind up his private affairs there. The Rev. W. H. Walton, who i» retiring from the position of curate of Kilbirnie-Miramar Parish, to become as•istant to the Rev. W. Fkicourt, Vicar Of St. Thomas's Parish, WelEngtoa South, will pay a business visit to Australia before he takes up hi& new duties on 4tk July. Councillor John Snriih is to be presented with a. cheque in recognition of bis valuable services to the city over a long term of years. The presentation .•ill be made at the Town Hall on Wednesday afternoon by Mr. J. G. W. Aitfcen, chairman of the committee which has the matter in hand. The staff of Messrs. W. M. Banaatyne and Co., Ltd., held a very successful smoke concert last evening to bid farewell to Mr. S. Kirker, who is leaving the firm to take up the position of manager of the Gold-en Bay Shipping Company, Nelson. Mr. S. Dix presided, and on behalf of the staff presented Mr. Kirker with a dinner servicej a caee of pipee, and a travelling rug. Messrs. Geary, Bowden, Wright, Cameron, Halliburton, and Cook contributed to an enjoyabi* musical programme. Mr. Kirker leaves on Saturday to take up his new position. Mr. C. Hill was presented by the T' Hiwi Bowling Club laet night with a handsome easy chair on tho occasion of his eightieth birthday. Dr. Herbert, in making the presentation, referred to the good work done by Mr. Hill in furthering the game; his little green at Te Hiwi, he said, was the rallying ground of a host of good fellows, who were veiy grateful to Mr. Bill for the work he had accomplished. On behalf of the ulub he wished "many happy -returru*" to the father of bowfing in Wellington and hoped he would be spared for many years to enjoy the game. Mr. Hill wa* greeted with a storm of applause on rising to reply. He had, he said, always thoroughly enjoyed 1 the bowling gatherings at Te Hiwi, and the jolly good fellowship they brought about. He hoped nm friends would remember that the gate* of Te Hiwi were always even to members, visitors, and sportsmen aIJ, and he thanked the donors of the gift for the very kindly feeling that had prompted it.
