THE TARANAKI TEAM

[BX TELEGRAPH — FIUSSS ASSOCIATION.] NEW PLYMOUTH, 6th June. The following will represent Taranaki against Wellington at Hawera next week: Prince, Stohr, S. Cameron, G. Loveridge, Jif'Lecd, Roberts, Brown, M'Allum, Hawkins, Whittington, Tamu, Young, Pini, Cain, Burks; emergencies, Kupe, Franklyn, Dewar, and J. Kissick.

The Hon. Dr. Rangihiroa has beeu .indisposed, and has been confined to his bed for the past four days, but its now on the road to recovery. Some little time ago it was reported from Dunedin that a man who had purchased a pound of tobacco by the stick, had it weighed, when it wae found that the sticks did not weigh the full pound. The purchaser complained to the Inspector of Weights and Measures, but that officer said that his function was merely to test scales and weights. This matter wae brought before the Wellington Trades Council, and that body sought legal advice as to the position, and was informed that the Weights and Measures Act does not give the inspectors power to prosecute m any caee where th« weights themselves are not up to the standard ; it only authorises the inspector to compare the weights, measures, and weighing machines. The council has set -up a deputation to wait on the Minister of Justice regarding this position, and to ask that the legislation be amended so as to give the inspector power to prosecute in all case* of shortweight goods being sold. "ArL and the Commonweal," by William Archer (Watts and Co.), is a well printed and well bound essay, fir*t delivered as the Conway Memorial Lecture at Southplace Institute. It is an eloquent plea for the making of ait a social factor in the life of the Commonwealth. • * ' A "fruit matines" will bo given by the Adelphi mani'geiueut for to-ine-iiow afternoon..
