MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

To-day's sitting of the Magistrate's Court was presided over by Mr. W.. G. Riddell, B.AL For drunkenness, John Price was penalised in the euni of 20s, and four first, .offenders were dealt .with in the usual manner. Pines of £2 and £4 were imposed on Victor Emanuel Scoullar and Geo. Harley, respectively, for breaches of' theii prohibition orders. Each was ako convicted and discharged for drunkenness. It was alleged against Walter .Richard Sadler that ho had attempted to' procure abortion. Accused was arrested on a wan-ant issued at Christchurch. He was remanded till to-morrow Bail in the sum of £300 was allowed. Mr. Hindmarsh appeared for accused. Two young men, J. Wilson and A. Cutbush, charged with having forged a cheque for £20 lie on th& National Bank, Hokitika, were remanded until Wednesday. Bail wa6 fixed in the stun of £100. ■ An accused was fined £2, with costs, for a breach of his prohibition order, and two others, for a similar offence, £3, with co6ts. John Blanchett, who was found in a sly grog shop, recently raided in Cubastreet, waa fined 20a, with cost* 7s. * For using obscene language, Win. Everest was mulcted in a penalty of £3, with costs and witnesses expenses, 19s. > For disobedience of maintenance orders George. Henry Bradley and William Slattery were each fined 40s. Alexander Robert Johnson was ordered to contribute 15s per week towards the support of his wife. Frederick Charles Howell, a wharf labourer, v/as charged with having assaulted Philip Herbert Powell, boatswain of the Hinemoa. Powell stated that Howell _ struck him without provocation, but this was denied by Howell, who alleged that the affair had been meiely a rough-and-tumble fight. His Worship considered that the assault had been a severe ona. and fined Howell £3. with witnesses' and medical expenses (£1 4s). Mr. Salek appeared for accused. Mr. T. Bi^h, J.P., presided at a sitting of the Mount Cook Police Court this anorning, when the following offenders were dealt with for drunkenness: John Dutch, William Severn, and one fiift offender wera convicted and discharged, and one tir*,t offend &r. who did not put in an appearance, was lined 10«, in default twenty-lour lunuV impiifccmtnent.
