When play started on Saturday Central had put up 233 and East had 24 up for no wickets, Bowles and Mahoney being the not outs. East A, favourites at the beginning of the season, reached 42, when both Bowles and Mahoney left, clean bowled by Robinson, who was keeping an excellent length, while the deliveries mad-e pace from tie pitch. Then Tucker and Gibbes took up thetale, and East, looked to have a distinct chance, these consistent batsmen adding 74 for the third wicket. Then once again disaster overtook East, for Blamires, from the south, end, had Tucker caught by C. Hickson, and Robinson coaxed Gibbes to lift one to Birchs— two good wickets in successive overs. Blamires bowled S. Hickson and Midlane in quick succession, and the last seven men added only 24 runs — Robinson and Blamires finishing them off in quite good shape. When Blamires bowled Hickey, Central had won the championship for the second time, their opponents having been, successful the other time. Batting a second time, Central hit up 85 for one wicket, Jackson and Birch respectively 44 and 26 each, i)fofc out, batting nicely, the former making 18 in five successive scoring strokes. South beat Victoria College narrowly on the first inningsi by 160 to 140. The Collegians resumed on Saturday with five for 45, but Atmore and Dickson, with Burns to follow, helped to make an interesting finish, the tally reaching 144. Keys bowled well for the winners, who had 90 up for one wicket at a second knock, Walters batting vigorously for 44 not out. South, by their victory, ran into third place in the championship — a& encouraging _ performance after an unpromising opening. > North found' East B fairly /easy victims, and Wagstaffe, Hales, and Collett batted nicely for the losere, who were materially assisted by Mr. " Sundries," who made 30. Against Petone'a 219 Hut* simply faded away. The Valley representatives could only manage 75 and 51 in successive innings, Bennett and Nunn playing havoc with the ball.
