PRIMATE AND THE DICKENSGALA PERFORMANCE. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright (Received February 1, 10 a.m.) LONDON, 31«t January. The Primate, the Most Rev. Dr. Davideon; in a private letter to the Sunday Alliance, condemns the holding of the Dickens gala theatrical performance on 7th January last His Grace says it is the obligation of every Christian to safeguard the Lord's Day ; the opening of the theatres on that day would be a terribly false step, and a grave wrong to thousands of theatrical folk. [The Dickens Centenary gala performance' was held at the Coliseum on Sunday, 7th January. Sir John Hare, Mr. E. S. Willard, and three hundred leading actors and actresses appeared in Dickens characters, the performance Tesulting in the sum of £2500 being obtained for the five grandchildren of the novelist, who are the daughters of Mr. Charles Dickens, junior.]
