MILKMAN IN TROUBLE

♦ FINED FOR SELLING POOR MILK. Two city milkmen, Edward Oeborne and D. Sullivan, were charged in the Magistrate's Court, before Mr. A. Crooke, 8.M., to-day, with having sold milk that was below the standard required by the Sale of Food and Drugs Act. Sub-Inspected Sheehan prosecuted, and Messrs. F. Ward and P. J. O'Regan appeared for Oabome and Sullivan respectively. Osborne pleaded guilty, and, through his solicitor, explained that he had to rely solely on his supplier. If the milk was not up to standard he was not aware of it. There was no intent on his part to sell adulterated milk. A fine of £5 was imposed, but on counsel pointing out that his client had been in business for twenty-seven years and had nflyer> been charged similarly: also that in similar cases the fines had not been more than £2 his Worship reduced the amount to £2, with costs (13a), and analyst's fee (10s 6d), . Sullivan's plea was also one of guilty. Mr. O'Regan said that his client obtained his milk from a company in the city, and naturally assumed that it was up to standard. There was no .wilful in: ! tent on his part. He was quite unaware that he, personally, was liable if the milk was not up to standard. A similar fine to that in the first case was imposed. A charge against each defendant of having sold adulterated milk without notifying the purchaser of such adulteration was withdrawn by the department.
