The Commerce and Tourists Division of the Department of Agrioulture, Commerce, and Tourists has received the fojlowing oablegram from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, dated London, 27th January. (Note,— Quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot). , Mutton.— The market is quiet. /Trade in mutton is very disappointing, there being only a very hand-to-mouth demand. Although very limited supply, buyers are not inclined to make forward purchases of mutton at present prices in anticipation of heavy . arrivals, but polders are firm. North Island, <Ud ; Australian, 3^d ; River , P{a.te, 34d. i Lamb. — There is a gopd demand for all lamb. River Plate lambs better quality than last year. New Zealand lamb o^her than Canterbury average s|d ] Australian, 4|d; River Plate, *id. 1 Beef. — The market is very firm, and is affected by decrease in arrivals. New ! Zealand s.U>ok is almost exhausted. New i Zealand hinds 4£d t fores; 4d- A , small I quantity on hand has sold a$ this price. Butter. — The market js quiet, but holders, are firm,, as a moderate supply ia ex1 peoted, an increasing quantity going to the Continent- The average price for the weak for choicest New Zealand butter per cwt is 131s, Australian 128s; Argentine 128s, Danish 1355, Siberian 1295. Cheese. — The market is. firm.er. There is more demand., The ayaraga price for the week for finest N.Z. cheese per cwt. is— White, 70s 6d ; coloured, 71ft 6d; English Cheddar, 90s. Hemp — The market is a shade weaker; very heavy shipments are expected frpm Manila. ■ The market is dependent on Manila reports. New Zealand good fair grade on spot per ton, £21 10s; fair grade, £20 10s; fair current Manila, £21 ss; forward shipment — New Zealand good fair, £21 15* • fair, £20 lfjs; fancurrent Manila, £22. The output from Manila for the week was 31,000 bales. Wool— The market for merino is a shade weaker. Crossbred market remains firm. Cocksfoot Seed— The market is firm.
