ENQUIRY INTO COLLIERY FATALITY.
CHRISTCHURCH, 12th September! The inquest concerning the death of Thomas Patter6ori, who received fatal injuries in the Homebush colliery at Glentunnel last Friday, .and died later at the hospital, was resumed today. G-eorge Aitken, deputy-manager of the mine, stated that _ deceased wae employed in undermining coal in order to widen the tunnel when the accident occurred. A etotte, weighing about 30 cwt, became dielodged, and fell on Patterson. Replying to Tnspectot Green, of the Mines Department, witness said that he had examined the place before the accident, and deemed it' to be Safe. Deceased was a capable man, and was carrying out hie work properly. An eye-witnese stated that a block of stone fell on deceased's right shoulder, pinning him to the ground, while a timber prop was being applied to the roof. John Campbell, mine manager, stated that as he did not consider Patterson was badly injured he had tho ston^ broker* up be/ore tho inspector ' visited the mine.
A verdict vraa returned that deceased wa<3 accidentally killed. \
LIBEL ACTION FAILS.
MASTERTON, 12th September. A case was heard in the Supreme Court to-day, in which 3.^ J. Kellihei*, law clerk, claimed from Jabez Bridges, organiser of tho No-license League, the sum of £1002 for alleged libel contained in a lettet itiA report 01 a meeting published in the^ W&irafapa Age. After hearing evidence for the plaintiff, his Honour 'directed that a verdict be givpn_ for defenda-nt on the gronnd that plaintilf had already accepted a sum of £40 from the Wa.irarapa Age in satisfaction of his claim for damages in respect to the same libel. The jury returned a verdict accordingly, with costs.
