CHRISTCHUftCH, 12th September. At a public mooting convened by the Christchurch Tramway Employees' Union, held to-night, and largely attended, tho Tramway Board's merit a>nd demerit system was discussed. Some ludicrous examples of the operation of the system were cited by the secretary of the union. It was unanimously resolved—" That this meeting is of opinion that the merit and demerit system in force on the Chriptchurch tramways should be abolished." Another motion was proposed — " That. in the event of the Tramway Board declining to remedy the men's grievances by abolishing the merit and demerit system, the Tramway Employees' 'Union take steps to move organised labour to ask Parliament to amend the Tramways Act so as to render it impossible fof such a system to continue." An amendment was proposed by Mr. F. R. Cooke, of the Socialist Party, to the effect that the Tramway Employees' Union should join the New Zealand Federation of Labour (miners and shearers), but was ruled out of order as a matler to be dealt with by the union. This led to considerable disorder, in the midst ot which the motion wa* put and declared by the chairman to be carried.
