RAILWAY WORKERS.
In thd House of Representatives yesterday, Mr. D. Mijaren gave notice to ask the Minister of j&aiiways the following questions :■— 'Why casual hands in 'the railway good»«heids, termed hour to hour casuals, are only receiving Is per houi", whilst men on the wharves doing the same class of Work receive Is 3d per hour and 2s jiwr hour before 8, a.m. and after 5 p.m« ; Why regulatkm 46 under the Act is«, not being given effect to by the officers imder hk control j Will the MinisteT subroat the regulation under the classification to the Crown la<w officers with a view, to seeing if they are Hot in many iflsteirtces ultra vires; Will the Minister furnish a return showing how many guards have reached the position of statiomaaster 'during the J*st ten years, and nMre particularly during his tern of office' ; Is it nob a fact that the officers undec the Minister's control in the Railway Department are inflicting punishments upon the staff which a>re not provided for or contemplated by the Classification Act, i.e.* keeping men suspended f t>r long periods (sis: and seveii weeks) aifcd then fining them a nominal sum, and making' them transfer their families attd belongings at thftir own expense, so as to prevent the member taking advantage of the Appeal Board.
