At the sitting of the Supreme Court to-day the trial commenced of John Owen, who was arrested at Auckland recently on a chaTge of attempted murder at Foxton five years ago. The charge was made up of separate indictments, alleging attempted murder, assault, demanding money with menaces, and intimidation, t * ' The chief witness, E&stoh, who had employed accused, stated that accused demanded money. On being refused he pointed a. gun at witness, and also made a lunge at him -with an axe.Finally, he fired the gun as witness was running away, but the cartridge mis-, fired.
