COST OF TWO RAILWAY DISASTERS.
It is a remarkable fact that the cost to Victoria of the two last, great railway disasters— at Sunshine and Richmond respectively—was almost exactly ,• alike (states the M'elboartie Age). The total sttm^ paid on account of Sunshine was £125,623; the Richmond disaster cost £126,701. The Acting-Premier (Mr. Watt) says it is at present anticipated that £5000 or £6000 will be left in the railway accident fund when the adjustments are completed on 31sfc inst. The fund is formed by setting apart 10» out of, every £100 of the gross railway revenue. It was expected last session that the Railway Bill would cohtain a provision doubling the amount to bo deduced from the receipts, and in his Budget he had stated that it would be 1 per cent., but this proposal was not ratified. The adjustment therefore had yet to be made. The Sunshine accident had depleted the fund, but a special vote put it slightly in credit. This vote amounted to £70,000. Tire Richmond disaster and some minor accidents again caused the credit balance to disappear.
