REDUCTION OF CAPITAL VALUE
APPEAL. BY SETTLERS. Three settlers from the Ruatiti, Mangatiti, and Baiiaka Blocks, in the South Waiiiiariiio Ceuntryi north oi the Manganm-a-te-ao River, waited on the Wellington Land Board to ask for a redaction in the assessment of the capital value of their sections on several grounds, such as distance from the rail* way, lack of roads, afld poorer quality of the land than was at first anticipated. The board took the matter in Committee, and spent aeveral hours in deliberations. .Finally, yesterday the following resolution was announced !— "Th© board considered the matter in committee, and resolved that there was no power with* out, introducing legislation ot complying with the request of the petitioners, also that the price is not excessive, taking into consideration the liberal amount spent in roads, and whilst roads are being constructed for a period of four jears the settler* are entirely free from fates and rents, the boa-rd does not see its way to recommend any reduction in the capital value of the land, which averages 39s 9d per acre and 50s 6d, as stated by the deputation. The board, however, urges the commissioner to represent to the head office the necessity of the Public Works Department vigorously pushing on tho roading, so that it may be completed within the four years' exemption period, which has only from two to three years now to run."
