MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Mr. W. Q. Riddell, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Henry Bennett, a sailor on "the Tonga* riro, pleaded not guilty to assaulting Charles W. Baker. He was remanded until to-morrow. Jean Maitland Harrop was convicted and discharged for insobriety, and fined 20s, with the option of seven days' <l«tention, for a breach of a prohibition order. t Two first-offending inebriates were convicted and discharged, and another WMt mulcted in a penalty of ss. A middle-aged man named Joseph M'Millan was charged with deserting his wife at Sydney in 1908. Senior Constable Irvine, of the New South Wales police, produced, a warrant fof the arrest of accused, who was ordered to be ojefcurned to Sydney in custody of the constable. Another Sydney resident, named Thomas M'Girr, was also ordered to be returned, to Sydney in charge of Constable Irvine. M'Girr was charged with disobedience oi a maintenance order. Francis Seymour, who failed to appear, was fined. 10s, with costs 7s, for driving a vehicle after sunset without a light. In the case in which William Scott and Henry Martindale were charged with a breach of the Gaming Act, an adjournment was granted; until tho 18th of August. Ifc was alleged in the information that defendants published a document containing a notification as to betting on horse races, to wit, tire Great , Northern Hurdles and Great Northern Steeplechase, run at Auckland, on the 3rd and sth of June respectively. Mr. P. W. Jackson appeared for defendants. Matthew Moyninan, for ■whom Mr. 3- J. M'Gratli appeared, pleaded guilty to a charge of having allowpd his chim- j ncy to catch fire. He was fined sk, with costs 9s, and ordered to pay one wit- j ness's expenses (4s). j
