• ♦ FIRST OF THE MANDARINS. The Sydney boat brought the first of tbe mandarin oranges on Wednesday, and they were a very fine sample, realising 6s per half gin-case. Sydney oranges sold badly, as they came on the heels of heavy consignments of Island oranges, which arrived by two boats at once. The Sydney oranges brought up to halfcrown a case. Fine samples of thinskinned Mildura and South Australian lemons came into the market, and brought from 9s to 10s a case, while Sydney lemons went for 5s to 7s & case. South Australian grapes are done, none coming into the market last week. Locally-grown hothouse grapes brought Is to Is 3d per lb, but only a few are available. Shipments of apples, which had been falling off for the past few weeks, are now coming to hand more plentifully from the Motueka district, and prices by Saturday had become weaker. Fairly good cookers sold to-day for 3s to 4s, and dessert sorts from 6s to 7s 6d. The pear season is almost over. Choice fruit suitable for dessert brought to-day 6s to Bs, and cooking sorts 3s to 4s. Cape gooseberries are almost done, and bring about 3d per lb. A few local tomatoes are coming forward, and are in good demand, bringing 6s to 8s per half case. Cabbages were still plentiful at 3s to 4s a sack. Good cauliflowers are very scarce, and bring 8s to 10s a sack. Parsnips sold on Saturday at 4s to 5s a sack, carrots 3s to 4s, and turnips 4s, pumpkins range from 3s to 4s a sack, but marrows are difficult to dispose of at Is to Is 6d a sack. There was a good demand on Saturday for celery at 2s per dozen heads.
