Tho conjunction ot Mars and the moon, which attracted attention a few weeks ago, was surpassed in interest last evening by a beautiful conjunction j of the moon and Venu.G, which has for some time been a very brilliant evening star. The two luminaries were only about a degree apart, and a tiny but bright star, about half a degree from Venus— the only star visible in that quarter — completed a most interesting trio. Owing to the clearness of the western sky, the phenomenon was seen to great advantage. "Who says that' it illegal to include payment of expenses of firemen to com--netitiohs ?" asked a delegate at the conference of fire boards to-day. "The Audi-tor-General saya it is, but he is always saying things of that kind, and putting his 'tags' on." "Yea," said another member, "he has even put a tag on to the balance-sheet of the State coal-mine, and in the last Gazette the accountant replied, 'there is nothing in it. " This was greeted with a general chorus of "there you are." Messrs. Stewart Daw.«on and Co. have written to the president of the Wellington Rose and Carnation Club offering a solid silver trophy for the best bowl of red fragrant roses at the next roso flho-w.
