PARLIAMENT.

TO-DAY'S PROCEEDINGS. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. The House met at 2.30 p.m. Several petitions were presented by Hi 1 . J. P. Luke praying for the formation of a new county, to be called the Olaki County. Further petitions were presented in favour of universal compulsory military training. Notice was given by Mr. Fisher to ask the Prime Minister if he will legislate so as to deal with persons who on motor cycles or motor cars travel at a . speed which constitutes a danger to the public. Intimation was given by Mr. Hardy to ask the Minister of Agriculture if he will take steps to protect the New Zealand consumers against the sale of butter of defective quality. Mr. 11. W. Smith gave notice to ask the Government when, the discussion on the Timber Commission's report -trill be taken. GRAND JURIES. Mr. T. E. Taylor gave notice to move whether the Government would take steps to abolish grand juries -as being class institutions and antagonistic to the interests of the democracy. He alleges that frequently improper influences are exercised by grand juries against the course of justice, and that the persons forming these juries are largely" drawn from one class in the community. (Left sitting.) THE LICENSING COMPROMISE. As the days advance the impression seems to be gaining ground that many ardent adherents ol the no-license cause consider that their leaders have- made a mistake in "agreeing to a compromise with the other side in terms' already announced. Several meetings have been held, and in some quarters it is stated that the Bill embodying the basic principles of the compromise will never find its way on to the statute book in this 'Parliament.
