OTAKI ITEMS. [BT TELEGRAPH — SPECIAL 10 THE POST.] OTAKI, This Day.The Horticultural and Industrial Society's show opened hercj to-day in excellent weather, and the all-round display is really good. Roses are not so good as was expected, but the decorative class is especially strcrag, likewise the industrial exhibits. When the hall was opened, yesterday afternoon there was a big attendance. , Mr. Oamer. Woods, proprietor of the Telegraph Hotel, yesterday slipped off a verandah and broke his leg just above the ankle. He was conveyed to the hospital for treatment. - GREYTOWN MATTERS. [BY TELEOEAPH — SPECIAL TO THE POST.] GREYTOWN, This Day. Most of tho crops are now in. Those put in early are looking well. . Mr. Bert Trotman, who got his fingers in a circular saw, and Mr. A. Coe, who had his fingers smashed by the fire engine, are progressing satisfactorily. The Rev. A. T. "B. Page, vicar of St. Luke's Church, will attend, the .church conference at Masterton to-day. Fruit promises to be plentiful this season, especially apples, currants, and gooseberries. »The English plum n not bearing too well, but the Japanese variety bids fair to yield a good crop. A meeting of the South Wairaraptt, Hospital Trustees was held yesterday. Present : Messrs 11. Morrison (chairman), M. Maxton, R. G. Welch, W. Udy, W. Moore, and W. J. Nix. The chairman reported a conference with Mr W. C. Buchanan, M.P., relative to the new addition to building. He also reported receiving £1 from the Bush Hotel collection, box. The bank balance is £261, and accounts were passed for payment amounting to £87. Eleven patients were admittted during the month, ten discharged, and eleven still remain in. Mr. W. Moore reported on his •tosit during the month, and Mr. H. Morison was appointed visitor for the present month.
Payments towards thp expenses of fire brigade competitions were severely condemned by some of the principal insurance managers at the conference of fire brigades. Mr. Simpson said ho was so disgusted ot the Masterton Board voting £28 for one of thpso competitions that he resigned as their delegate. Mr. Mallard drew attention to a disastrous fire that occurred at Newcastle, New South Wales, winle the principal members of the brigade were, with a lot of their gear, at a competition.
