STEAMER CORINTHIC.
STRIKES ON A ROCK. DAMAGE NOT SERIOUS. By Telecrapn.— Preen Association.— Copyright. (Received May 19, 8.15 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. News has been received here that the steamer Corinthic, Homeward-bound trom Wellington, was ashore for several hours on Witch's Rock, Rio de Janeiro. The vessel was towed off, and it was found that she had not sustained serious damage. VOYAGE RESUMED. (Received May 19, 9 a.m.) LONDON, 18th May. The Corinthie has resumed her voyage from Rio de Janeiro to London. - The Corinthie, one of the three twinscrew White Star steamers running under the auspices of the Shaw-Savill and Albion Company, left Wellington at 12.30 p.m. •on Thursday, the 22nd April. She was a full ship on leaving these shores, so far as her passenger accommodation was concerned, there being 286 passengers in all classes. Her cargo was a full avid valuable one. The vessel was under the command of Captain L. Thompson, R.N.R., who joined the Corinthie when she was last in London, and made his first trip to New Zealand with her. According to the steamer's time-table, the Corinthie was due at Rio de Janeiro on Saturday last. She is timed to arrive at Plymouth on the 3rd June, and at London on the 4th. "Witch's Rock" is unknown to the Admiralty charts of the harbour of Rio de Janeiro, and the' coastal approaches. Captain Moffatt, of the Tainui, which is at present in Wellington, states that Rio is one of the safest harbours in the world. There is plenty of room, and the water is deep enough to accommodate the largest vessels. No dangerous shoals or rocks obstruct the entrance, and there are no rocks that are not well above water, perfectly visible and fully charted. The name "Witch", is, suggests Captain Moffatt, probably a translation of a Spanish or Portugese word.
