MURDER IN INDIA. EXECUTION OF SATYENDERA.
OEOWDS GATHER. BUT THERE ARE NO DISTURBANCES. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright. (Received November 23, 8.41 a.m.) CALCUTTA, 22nd November. Satyendera, who was concerned in the murder of Gossain, the approver, in the prison hospital at Alipur, at the end of August, was hanged at Calcutta. Orders had been given that the cremation of his remains, after the capital sentence had been carried out, should take place witJiin the gaol precincts, but with the view of outwitting the Government, extremists in Calcutta constructed an effigy of Satyendera, intending to carry it to the river-side after the execution. The authorities, however, posted notices forbidding the procession. Crowds of women gathered at the river-side, expecting the ashes to be taken there after cremation, but the authorities refused to sanction this. There were no disturbances. The action of the authorities was with the object of preventing a repetition of the popular outbreak of anti-European feeling that followed the cremation in public of Kanai Lai Dutt, also executed «for the part he played in the murder of Gossain.
