THE SANTO MURDERS. PUNITIVE EXPEDITION.
NATIVES FLEE. WOMEN AND A CHILD KILLED. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright. (Received November 23, 9.42 a.m.) • SYDNEY, This Day. A punitive expedition, sent to the Island of Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides, to punish the murde/ers of Mr. Peter C. Greig, a settler (aged 51), and his two daughters (17 and 16 years old respectively), consisted of native police and an armed party from H.M.S. Prometheus. The expedition sm*prised the village concerned in the murder. The inhabitants made a dash for the hills, and the native police fired, six women and a child being shot. When the mail left the party were still in pursuit of the tribesmen. Robbery, it is said, was the object of the crime, which was a cold-blooded one. Mr. Greig was a highly-respected settler, and his daughters were charming girls.
