" UNPATRIOTIC AND UNJUST."
CRITICISM OP EDUCATION BOARI> REPLIED TO. A statement attributed to the Mangamaire School Committee appeared in a Press Association telegram from Pahiatua in yesterday's issue of The Po&t, lo the effect that in the selection of teachers for the Mangaraaire School, the Wellington Education Board had sent forward to the committee names of teachers from Melbourne and Sydney to the exclusion of names o( teachers trained at the expense of the Dominion. We have been requeeted to point out that the statement made is not in accordance with the facts of the case, and is evidently made under a misapprehension as to the powers of the board. It has been explained to us that of the sixteen applicants for the position, while all had some qualification and some experience, only five possessed full certificates and were cjualified for appointment. Of these five the names and papers of four were transmitted to the committee, the fifth being included in the selected list for a vacancy in another school. Of the four mentioned, two were in the service of the Wellington Education Board ; the third has had over thirteen years' experience in New Zealand, though it happens that at present she is in Sydney ; the fourth was trained in Victoria, but is now resident in New Zealand. It is pointed out that it may be true that some of the applicants are doing good work, but the board cannot legally appoint them to positions for which there are fully certificated applicants.
