Tho civil sittings of the Supreme Court will begin next Monday. Dates will be fixed by Mr. Justice Cooper at 10.30 to-morrow. Following arc some of the cases :—Hataitai Land Company v. John J. Boyd, claim £27 9s 7d, under agreement ; Edward John Scarl v. Thos. Patrick Lyons, cleam £1000, damages for slander; James Doyle v. VVellington United Furniture Trade Union, claim £100, jlamages for alleged unlawful expulsion and injunction ; Phoenix Assurance Company v. United Insurance Company, claim £620, duo on policy, or rectification, etc. ; Alex. Dunn v. Thos. Patrick Lyons, claim £101 12s 2d, on promissory note ; Fleming Ross v. Michael Frain, claim £100, for money paid ; Alice Bertha Sherwood v. Win. John Parsons, claim £100, damage 'to property.
Mr. Peter Barr, of Dunedin, formerly president of the Incorporated Institute of Accountants of New Zealand, and a member of the present council of that body, passed through Wellington to-day on his way to Auckland. Mies Julia Moran, vioh'nistc, announces that she has resumed tuition. Mr. Justice Button will hold a sitting in Banco next Wednesday, when argument will be taken in the special case of the Commissioner of Taxes v. Trustees of Jacob Joseph's estate, and the Public Trustee v. Loasby, an appeal by the Public Trustee against a decision given at Masterton by Mr. W. P. James, S.M. The V.M.C.A. Board of Management has secured a site, in Moray-place, Dunedin, alongside the JeVish Synagogue, for the home for which a successful canvass of that city w-is made a few months ago, says a Press Association telegram. The Wellington Racing Club has placed the Trentham racecourse and buildings at the disposal of the Fire, Marine, and Accident Underwriters' Association for its annual picnic next Thursday. At 3.5 yesterdpy afternoon an outbrei'k of lire occurred in a two-story house at Town-road, Kilbirr.ie, occupied by Mr. Gnzzard. The fire broko out in a cupboard under tho stairs, but it was extinguished by the Kilbirnie Fire Brigade and others before much damage was clone. liefoie Mr Riddsll, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court this morning, Robert Ibell, with (several aliases, was charged with forging a cheque for the sum of £5 nt M.asterton. He was lermnded until Saturday next U> appear at Masterton. For drunkenness Thomas Scott and Amo3 Moore were each fined 10a, in default 48 hours' imprisonment. One first offender was convicted and discharged, and two others fined 10s, in default 48 hours' imprisonment. Leonardo Lanna, of the Italian ship Geni was charged with wilfully disobeying the orders of the captain of the ship. It was stated th.it accused had gone ashore contraiy to orders. Accused staled ho had no intention whatever of deseiting ; ho simply wanted to go ashore.
