THE WORLD'S SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.
NOTES FROM WANGANUI. [Br Teleghaph. — Speoial to The Post.] WANGANUI, This Day. Last evening Tr-esidder did his usual se-\ en-mils row. Wt-bb indulged in a few sprints, and the form displayed was most reassuring to his supporters. One enthusiast, who has se^n all the bei>t men of the last thirty years, including Hanlan, Beach, Kemp, Searle, Neilson, Stanbury, and others, declares that not one of them rowed in better style than Webb is now showing. The champion's sv, ing and balance iS equal to the best ever shown by Haulan, he says. However this may be, there is no getting away from the fact that Webb's boat was travelling very fast last evening, 'ihe lift was beautiful, and thei3 seemed to be life in every movement of the body. This morning he had an occasional sprint in the course of a sis mile low. and the critics had nothing but piaise for his style. If he is as fit on the day as he is at present then it appears safe to predict that he will retain the title. At the same time, Tresidder is doing splendid work now, and gets a lot of pace out of his skiff. His sculling is not so clean and h? may lack the brilliancy of his opponent, but he is remarkably well, and is bound to row a great race right to the finish. He does not show tha wonderful pace which Stanbury did when hcie,~ but he is gaining friends by reason of tha fact that his work shows he is a genuine stayer. Ho appears confident too, and l»ughs at those who declare that he is too old. Ho aays he was never better ia his life, and certainly a mau could not look more fitted for the contract on hand. Though he keeps at* about 12.12, this fact does not worry him rior his trainer. They reckon he will row as well at that weight as he ever did at 12.5. Arnst is expected in Wanganui next week to make arrangements with the winner, and will remain here training till tho day of tli3 race.
