MEAT FAMINE IN GERMANY.
» j NEED OF AUSTRALASIAN SUPPLIES. PROPOSED REMOVAL OF DUTIES. [PBJSSS ASSOCIATION.} BERLIN, 16th October. The Cologne Gazette recommends the immediate opening of Germany's frontiers specially to Australian and New Zealand frozen be&f and mutton. This, it is pointed ont by the Gazette, would relieve the meat famine, .and at the same time encourage Australia to repeal ordinances restricting tho importation of foregn goods. The Gazette's article is interpreted as foreshadowing a breach on tho part of the Government with the agrarian party. ANOTHER VERSION. . A QUID PRO QUO WANTED. (Received October 17, 7 a.m.) LONDON, 16th October. The Standard's version of the article in the Cologno Gazette states that the journal urges the suspension of prohibition of the import of frozen meat as far as Australia is concerned, provided the Commonwealth refrained from giving preference to Britain. The Standard adds that the proposed concession would be the best means of inducing Australia to grant Germany most favoured terms.
