Inspector Ellison has received a message from Masterton stating that a farmer at Akura, named Edward Bixon, was accidentally killed whilst blasting a log yesterday. At the time of the constitution of the Borough of Miramar, tfhe roads in the district were, according to the Town. Clerk's report, in a somewhat unsatisfactory sate. The slender resources of the Road Board which at one time had control of them were totally inadequate to keep in good repair all the formed roads, the foxmatSon of unformed dedicated roads being an impossibility, and, although the main roads were maintained in as good a condition as could be expected, the less important roads suffered considerably. - The roads in Seatonn township were tio a great extent unformed, and the roads on the Overton and Seatoun extension blocks, primarily constructed in a very perfunctory manner, were in urgent need of attention. The cutting up of land by the several land companies and the necessary formation of roads was supervised by the Road Board, and later by the council, with the result that these roads should prove adequate to meet requirements for tome time to come. A large portion of the road work during the past year has consisted in the regrading and metalling of old roads, and for some years this work will be neces- , sary to place the old roads on a par , wit/b those constructed more recently by the land companies. The road work, witfb the exception of the contract for the metalling of Evans Bay-road, at a cost of £161, has been done by day labour. Some interesting .e turns have been received by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency of Auckland regarding a shipment) of 447 ducklings and 136 chickens, nays the Star. The ducklings realised in Londoo 3s 2d to 4s per bird, and aftler deducting all charges at Auckland and London on an average they bring to the shippers 2s 6d per bird. The small parcel of chickens shipped, though very small, and not in the beit of condition, realised 2« 4id on the London market, and after taking off London and -Auckland charges, left; to the shippers Is 6 l-6d per bird. These returns are very satisfactory, as birds from Auckland are new on the London market, and have yet to B«t their reputation. They are -apparently succeeding in tfhis, as the reports received from London on the birds speak very highly of them.
