The same gentlemun, discussing the political situation, said if either of Mr. Seddon's sons decides to stand for the vacant seat his return will be a certainty. Discarding this contingency he thought, from. what opportunity he had of judging the possibilities, that Mr. Michel (Mayor of Hokitika) would be about the strongest candidate offering. The name of Mr. Murdoch (Mayor of Kumara) was. also freely mentioned on the Coast", and another candidate who would receive very liberal support would be Mr. Petrie, who contested Mr. A. R. Guinness's seat last election.
