THE FIRST QUARTER'S RETURNS. The return of imports and exports for the first quarter of the 1905-6 year, ended 30th June, are published in this week's Gazette. Xiis imports totalled £2,246,746, as against £2,589,088 (including £200,155 of specie) for the corresponding quarter of last year. Of the quarter's total, £1,361,703 came from the United Kingdom, as against £1,416,494 in the 1904 June quaater; £118,869 from Victoria, as against £133,294; £213,095 from New (South Wales, against £413,645; £488 [ from Queensland, against £807 ; £9805 I from South Australia, against £10,888; • £3111 from Western Australia, against £10,868 ; £11,891 from Tasmania, against £7071; £8579 from Fiji, against £10,908; £49,074 from Bengal, against £42,216; £48,969 from Ceylon, against £51,556; £(763 from Singapore, against £15,034; £16,491 from Canada, against £17,116; and £2156 from British Columbia, against £1771. From foreign countries were imported during the quarter goods to the value of £15,015 from France, as against £9257 during the first quarter of last year ; £4299 from Italy, against £3619 ; £2859 from Switzerland, against £613; £54,884 from Germany, against £58,330; £16,121 from Belgium, against £20,336; £4477 fiom Holland, against £6261, £248,275 from America, against £303,732; £648 from China, against £1278 ; £14,348 from Japan, against £i7>081 ; £4598 from Java, against £2337; £7466 from the Friendly Islands, against £4541; and £2941 from the Society Islands, against £2211. Tho value of the imports at the chief portu of the colony for the quarter was as follows, the figures for the correbpondding quarter of 1904 being shown in' paienthesLs:— Auckland, £566,614 (£568,657); Wellington, £649,854 (£937,200) ; Lytteltop and Christchurch, £381,102 j (£419,319) ; Dunedin £373,918 (£360,017). Poverty Bay's imports showed aD upwaid leap from £9979 for the June quarter of lust year to £13,174 for the first quaiter of tho present year. The value of the exports for the quar- ' ter wes £3,437,962, as compared with £3,588,883 for the June quarter of last year. The contributions from the principal ports, with the figures for tile corresponding quarter of last year, were : — Auckland, £576,362 (£583,142) ; Wellington, £508,249 (£606,199); Lyttelton and Christchurch, £677,05 (£691,416) ; Dunedin, £356,236 (£623-,361). Wanganoi exports increased from £96,747 to £101,208; W?irau aud Picton's from £56,885 to £61,994; Timaru's from £239,965 to £284,734 ; and Nelsons from £19,169 to £23,845.
