* > VINDICATION OF MADAME MELBA* [press association.] (Received November 13, 10.53 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. In the Victorian Assembly, on the motion for adjournment, Dr. Maloney eulogised Madame Melba's appeal on behalf of sufferers by the drought, and strongly condemned the action of the Chamber of Commerce and a certain paper in throwing cold water on the scheme. Other members held that it was absurd to say that the appeal would ruin the credit of Australia, and asserted that the offer was rejected through ai feeling of false pride. They eulogised Madame Melba's generosity. The Premier (Hon. W. H. Irvine) declined to express an opinion as to the Government taking measures to assist distressed settlers, but thought private charity should first be exhausted.
