THE STRANDED STEAMER MAPOURIKA.
. * It is thought probable that the bow of the Mapourika, which has been very badly damaged, will be permanently repaired where she now lies, leaving the bulges and indentations to be smoothed out in the Port Chalmers dock — a comparatively small undertaking as compared with repairing the large holes torn in her hull by the stones of the north mole. The lifting has been done with so much care and judgment that none of the plates have been damaged in the process of raising with screw-jacks. The impact of the vessel on the rocks was much more serious than was thought at the time, for the water tanks were squeezed out of shape and received considerable damage. All the machinery is as good as the day it was put in position. Mr. Daniel returned to Greymouth by the Haupiri this afternoon, taking with him 21 boilermakers and labourers. There is yet a good prospect of the vessel coming to Wellington for permanent repairs.
