[press association.] Ottawa, 26th December. Canada agrees to share five-ninths of the Pacific cable equally with Great Britain. Two powerful American corporations are seeking Government concessions to lay a cable from America to Hawaii, the Ladrones, the Philippines, Japan, and China. Washington, 24th December. The American Government has ordered the Government gunboat Bennington to Beize Wake Island, in the Pacific. [Wake Island is an isolated rock in direct line between Hawaii and the Ladrone group.] (Received December 27, 9.30 a.m.) Washington, 28th December. The American Government intends to use Wake Island as a cable station.
