The public sent 250,000 post- cards to the Government asking for their release. The Pope, in an allocution to the College of Cardinals, has protested agaiust the persecution of the clergy in Italy by the Government authorities. His Holiness apparently referred to the vigilance and rigour of the authorities since the clerical intervention in the Milan riots some months ago.
