THE WRECK OF THE ZULEIKA. TO THE EDITOR,
- Sib — This deplorable disaster 'affords a strong illustration of the absolute necessity of, better lighting at Pencarrow Heads. ' If it were known that alow, powerful light existed at the entrance of the harbour, shipmasters caught in gales like the recent one would have confidence to run for the harbour, instead of making the fatal mistake of endeavouring to head-reach to the eastward, which brings them into Palliser Bay. Vessels which through stress of weather found themselves jammed on this side of the Straits, as a leeshore, would then have a chance of running into safety. With every severe southerly gale we are now having a vessel wrecked in close proximity to our harbour, and it is to be hoped that this last addition to the long list of casualties will convince the Marine Department of the criminal folly of tinkering in a half-hearted way with Somes Island light, or delaying to establish a powerful light placed low down at the entrance. It is time the general publio took the matter up. I am, &0., Safety. Wellington, 22nd April.
