CABBAGE PALM FIBRE. TO THE EDITOR.
Sib — Some time ago, in the interest of settlers, you published full instructions how to grow and prepare this fibre for market with the greatest ease and simplicity, thus furnishing profitable employment for old men and children in wet weather. I then forwarded samples to a first-class firm of merchants in London, and have just received their reply. The chief mentions, inter aim — " With reference to the sample of cabbage palm, fibre which you kindly sent to me, I have had the same, .examined by experts, and they , report -as follows: — 'We have shown the samples of jibre to our friends, and think it might' be worth £14 or £16 per .ton, but it is impossible to give any accurate valuation" on a small sample. If you could get two or three tons the trade would try it, and we then could give you a more acourate idea of its value.'" Probably some of the settlers would send small quantities to me, and I will forward them to London , but lam no longer in the Government service, and cannot afford to spend any more of my own money pushing the industries of the colony. I am, &c, James Freybebg. Hawker-street, Wellington, 22nd April.
