THE HOSPITAL AND CHINESE. TO THE EDITOR.
Sir— l beg to trespass a little on your valuable space in reply to " White Man" in the Evening Post of 21st April. With regard to the Hospital Trustees accepting the Chinese tender, I think they are justified in doing so. I consider they have as much right to compete as Europeans. The tenders were publicly called, and surely the Trustees could choose the one they thought the most satisfactory. In this Christian land everybody Wants fair play, Chinese as well as white men. In reference to the Chinese quarter, there are good and bad in every race. There are many houses in Wellington occupied by white men in quite as bad a state as the Chinese are reported to be. It is bad enough for us to be bound down to pay poll-tax to enter this country. There are many Europeans getting their living in China and competing keenly against the Chinese. Simply because there are a handful of our people carrying on the fruit and vegetable business in New Zealand, hence the jealousy. Evidently your correspondent is both narrow-minded and selfish. I am, &c, A Chinaman. Wellington, 22nd April, 1897.
