« K.C.M.G.-SHIP FOR THE PEEMIER OP VICTORIA. [PBESS ASSOCIATION.] London, Ist January. The London Gazette issued to-day contains the following New Year honours : — Sir Joseph Lister, Bart., President of the British Association, famous as being the first to apply antiseptic treatment in surgery, has been elevated to the Peerage. The Hon. W. St. John Brodrick, M.P. for Guildford and Under-Secretary for War (who moved the resolution in the House of Commons which brought about the downfall of the Rosebery Government), and Sir J. H. Kennaway/Bart., M.P. for East Devonshire, have been created Privy Councillors. Mr. W. Conyngham Greene, who a few months ago suceeded Sir Jacobus de Wet as British Resident in the Transvaal, has been appoiuted a Companion of the Bath. Mr. Frederick Will (of the firm of tobacco manufacturers) and Mr. Elliott Lees, M.P. for Birkenhead, one of the younger Conservative school of politicians — he is only 85 years of age, and has sat in three Parliament! —as member for Oldham from 1886-92, for a few months in the last Parliament, when returned for Birkenhead on a by-eleotion, and also in the present Parliament — have been created Baronets. Mr. George Turner, Premier of Victoria, has been created K.C.M.G. Fourteen knighthoods have also been bestowed.
