♦ THE NATIONAL CONFERENCE AS TO ITS CAUSES. [PBESS ASSOCIATION, j Calcutta, 31st December. The Indian National Conference has had under discussion the famine now prevailing in India, and declares that it is due to poverty, which is the result of many years' excessive taxation and over - assessment, coupled with expensive Governmental administration. The Conference has further resolved to cable to Lord George Hamilton, Seoretary of State for India, asking him to permit the public to contribute to a fund for the relief of the sufferer;. London; 31st December. The Lord Mayor of London has declined to open an Indian Famine Belief Fund until he baa been requested by the Government to take such a step.
