E. W. MILLS and CO.'S NEW BUILDINGS.
Mr. W. C. Chatfield, arohiteot, has completed the plans for a new building for Messrs. E. W. Mills & Co. (Limited), to be erected on a site which has a frontage of 145 ft to Victoria-street, 48Ct to Hunter-street, and 170 ft to Jervoia-quay. The main building will be of three floora, with an annexe Df two stories of the kind which, in tbe iron trade, ia technically known as an iron yard, for the storage of bar, sheet, and heivy iron. The main warehouse will havo a frontage of 72ft to Victoria - street, 48ft to Hunter - street, and 85ft to Jervoiaquay, the chief front entrance being at the corner of Jervoia-quay and Hunter-street. Massive circular-headed doors will lead into a vestibule, whioh again will open through heavy glass swinging doors to the wholesale sample room. Also on this floor will be tbe private room of Mr. E. W. Mills, Managing Direotor, offices for the clerical staff, and the counting-house. The ctrong-ronm will adjoin the olerka' department All rooms on this floor will be 16ft in height. A handsome staircase, 7ft wide, with light ornamental balusters, will lead to the second floor, a fine room, 14ft in height, which will be a show-room for goods in bulk. The third story will be 12ft high in the clear, and will be another store-room, for the lighter descriptions of ironmongery. The two-story building— known aa the iron yard— will be fitted up with all the latest mrans for the handling of heavy iron goods. On the ground floor will be three over-head travellers, and on the first floor will be another traveller of tho same description. The yard will have cart entrances from Jervois-quay and Victoria-street, the road being wide enough to pormit of three lorries being worked at the same time. The bnilding will be of brick and stucco, and the style adopted is one which is now generally used for commercial houses in America. The principal elevation will present a dooidedly handsome appearance, from the bold projecting buttresses, the nnmerous supporting columns, and the handsome, bold, oiroular-arohed windows. Thn contract for the new premises has beon let to Mr. James Trevor, the price being rather more than £7000. Tbe work will be put in hand without delay.
