HOW SATURDAY'S DEFEAT CAME ABOUT.
(Our Own Correspondent.) Chbistchubch, This Dat. The New Sonth Wales men left for the West Coast this morning. They are etill disinclined to play a return match, wbioh they are disposed to regard aa a cortainty for New Zealand. On taking the field on Saturday the visitors' instructions were that the forwards Bhould play as hard as possible while the backs did nothing bnt kiok to tench to save them. They put exceptionally strong forwards in, and the instructions wero carried out to the letter. New Zealand sorely missed Watson and Hab M'Kenzio in the sorume. The New Zealanders started with the idea , of playing very easily throngh the first spell , and coming away and scoring towards the finish of the seoond. Only when New South , Wales scored was this varied. Then the New Zealanders played up hard and put up twOi tries, when, considering themselves safe, they slacked off again. Unfortunately for them when they wished to come again AJf Bayly was quite unconsoious what he was doing, as the result of a collision, repeatedly mistaking which end he was playing from, and he had to be presently token off the field. This quite demoralised the baoks, apparently, for despite all effortß they could not score, and the kdeking-aut tactios of New South Wales left them little timo to do anything. Mabtirton, This Dat. The Masterton Football Club defeated Groytown on Saturday by 8 points to 6.
