NEW SOUTH WALES WINS THE REPRESENTATIVE MATCH. I By Tklbgrafh.] {united press association,) Curistchurch, 16th September. Glorious weather prevailed for the inter, colonial football match, and tho play was witnessed by clo3e on 4000 spectators. Th« reßult came as a great surprise to mofet people, New South Wales just getting home 'in a olose match by 8 points to 6. This was brought about principally through want of combination by the New Zealanders, this feature being lamentably apparent in tbo forward division. hach man there seemed to play a lone hand, and without any attempt at united aotion. In addition to this the New Zealand team lost tho services of Alf Bayly from the middle of the second spell. He received a severe knock, and was forced to look on in a aemi-d&zcd condition. lho following were the teams:— Now Sonth Wales — Full-back, Cobb ; three, quarters, Lnsk, Snrman, and Parish; fiveeighths, Riley; half, Galloway; forwards, Lane, Hanna, Catson, Aloook, Lohan, Scott, Wyburd. Edwards, Kyre. New Zealand-Full-back, D'Aicy; three-quarters, Baloh, A. Bayly, and H. Go.od j five-eighths, Butland; half, Cook ; forwards, Lambie, Hughes, W. Bayly, M'Kenzie, Swindloy, Humphreys, Maber, Co&krof t," and Stewart Mr. G. C. Faohe, of Wellington, acted as referee. Tho ground was in good order, although on the soft side. Wyburd ldoked off for New South Wales, and tho first soore oame when Hanna get over tho New Zoaland line from a sorum, Cobb converting. Soon afterwards Alf. Bayley got a chanco, and went over ; but no goal resulted — 5 to 3. The Black baoks gettiug possession again, more neat passing followed, and Baloh made a number of fine runs to the line, and very soon Humphreys got over. Baloh again failed to land a goal — 6 to 5. After this the play hovered about . the centre for some time, until Lane made a fine run to the New Zoaland line, and, passing to Lusk, tho latter was held just in timo. From then till half-time nothing of moment occurred. Centre play characterised the opening oi the seoond spell, but the Blue forwards gradually beat their opponents baok to tho ' flag, and a neat kiok by Parish wont out at the corner. A foroo down followed, and more contre play. Cockroft broko away, and ran well into Australian ground, Surman made a short dash, but Baloh answered with a beautiful run baok, threading his way very skilfully through bis opponents until bo was grassed olose on tho line. New Zoaland now instituted an attack that gavo the visitors ' an anxious time. Cockroft was almost over, and there was gocd passing between Cook, Balch, A. Bayly, and liood, the last being nearly in on two occasions. At laßt tbo Blue forwards, headed by Lane, broke through to midfield, and deßpite a powerful run by Hugh Good, the Sydney forwards came on again. D'Aroy, taking a flying kiok at the ball, missed, and Eyro pioked up and scored. Lutsk failed with the kiok— ti to 6. Good made a nice dash into tho Sydney territory, and A. Bayly was injured. The visitors, having the lead, took matters very easily. Despite cries from the crowd of " Don't waste time," the whistle was kept going incessantly, and the play was uninteresting and monotonous. The New Zoaland men, too, played apparently into the handsof their opjionentß, fiddling about at the line. As time was approaching the Blacks made every effort, but there was no further score.
