The New Zealand bhipping Company have replied to their application for the ship Mataura, that she had been plaoed at the disposal of the Dunedin company, whom they oonßidered had a prior claim to it It was decided to order a Hoslam dry air refrigerator at once, and advertise for sites for the company's works. 'I . J. Ryan, a book agent, was charged today with stabbing his wife. It appears they had a drunken quarrel, in which Mrs. Ryan got knocked about and stabbed in the arm. She did not appear to give evidence, and on being sent for was intoxicated when she arrived, and conld give no evidence. Ryan's defence was that h« tried to take the knife from his wife, and he supposed that in doing so he inflicted the wound. Under the circumstances, the Bench dismissed the case with a warning to Eyan. Captain Tozer, of theß.s. Rotorua, was, on the last voyage from Melbourne, presented by the passengers with a purse of sovereigns in token of gratitude for kindness and courtesy shown them when the Rotorua visited the Sounds on the West Const. Captain Tozer showed the passengers every point of interest, much to the gratification of those on board. The resolution was moved by the Vice-Chan cell or. The Waikato Steam Navigation Company haß ordered a stern paddle steamer from Home for the trade from Manukau to Waikato, via Waikato Heads. This Day. Daniel Hanaghan, cf Pukekohe, farmer, was admitted to the hospital last night with his right arm perfectly mangled and his hand torn off. Ho had been threshing wheat, and his hand waß drawn in by the machinery. He lost a great deal of blood, and is not expected to recover. ASHBDETON, THIS DAT. The Commissioner of Customs has been j pleased to order that the beer seized at three i local breweries a short time since shall be returned. This will make a great difference to the brewers, who have already been heavily fined. Had the beer been forfeited the loss would have been very severe.
