NEWS BY THE SUEZ MAIL. THE LIMEKICK RIOTS.

GBEAT FIRE IN LONDON. DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT HALF A MILLION. THE HEALTH OF COL. TVHITMORE. SERIOUS RELIGIOUS RIOTS IN INDIA THE MILITARY CALLED OUT. [By Telegraph.] (peb botomahana at the bluff.) London, undated. The Times giveß great prominence to the letters of Earl Grey, which argue powerfully against the renewal of the Anglo-French Treaty of 1860, whioh he says was obtained at a heavy price, involved a departure from Bojnd principles, and really injured the canse of free trade. Earl Grr>y advocates a return to the position which England departed from in 1860. England, he says, should regulate the tariff with a sole regard to her own wants without reference to the tariffs of other conntrie3. The affray at Limerick on the 4th instant was of a serious character, and showed the lawless spirit of the mob and the dangerous animosity entertained towards the military and police. The Hussars arrived at Limerick by an excursion train, and quarrelled with civilians. Toward* evening the row was renewed at the railway platform. Stones were thrown at the soldiers through the carnage windows. A private of the Scots Greys, who remained on the platform, was assanlted by the furions mob, and would have been murdered but for some civilians, who protected him. The disturbance gradually extended until reinforcements of soldiers and police arrived. These were violently attacked and stoned by the populace. After vainly endeavouring to disperse them by charging, ihe troops fired, wounding 30, several mortally. A great fire occurred at Cheapside and dest oyed tho premises of Mes-rs. Foster and Co., wine merchants, and others. Ihe fire spread furiously and caused great alarm. ' The firemen, however, succeeded in preventing it from spreading to the adjoining extensive promises of Messrs. Cops take, Moore, and Co. The total damage is estimated at .£500,000. Colonel TVhitmore is rapidly recovering from a painful surgical operation per/'ormed on him about a month ago by Professor B. C. Smith, of Kings' College. Bombay, 23rd September. Serious riots occurred at Murrain, on the 17th in at., between Hindoos and Mahommedana. The origin was that the former, who showed objections to the importation of beef in the city, overpowered a body of police and attacked a Mahommedan mosque, burning the Koran, sacred carpets, aad religions books. The Mahommedans in turn bnrnfc the Hindoo temples. Many people were injured on both sides. Eventually the troops were called out, and took possession of the city gates, the artillery taking a commanding position. The latest accounts report aU quiet. Reports from various parts of the country anticipate a splendid harvest. The late census shows the population of India to be about 252,000,000. Cholera is very prevalent in the Punjaub. The leading shareholders in the Indian goldmining companies offered a reward of .£lOOO to the manager who first produced 500oz of gold, and JoOO to the manager of the second mine producing the same amount, and also .£5OO to be distributed among the Btaff.
