THE SMALL-POX IN SYDNEY. MEETING OF NEW ZEALAND CENTRAL BOARD OF HEALTH.

The Central Board of Health for this colony met last eveninsf to consider what further precautionary measures were necessary in view of the danger of small-pox being introduced from Sydney. Some surprise was felt that no later telegraphic intelligence had been received on the subject from Sydney, the matter being one of such grave importance and public interest. The members present were the Hon. T. Dick, Colonial Secretary (President ex oj/tcio), Mr. W. Seed, Secretary of Customs, Mr. W. R. E. Brown, Registrar-General, Mr. G. S. Cooper, Under-Secretary, and Captain Johnston, of the Marine Department. The absent members were Drs. Hector and Skae. A letter as read from the Mayor of Auckland, pointing out that neither the City Council nor tho Harbour Board could efficiently exercise the funotions of a Local Board of Health under section 6, inasmuch the Council had no jurisdiction over the harbour, and the Harbour Board had none over the Quarantine Island. The President stated, moreover, that the Government were advised that the harbour did not come under the category of a Local Board as capable of being a Local Board of Health. After due consideration, the Central Board de» cided to act under the 14th section of the Act, sndas there wasno existing local body having the necessary extent of jurisdiction to appoint three parsons to be a Local Board of Health. Accordingly the Mayor of Auckland, the Chairman of the Harbour Board and the Harbour Masser of the port, wo appointed, with full jurisdiction oyor the city, the harbour and the quarantine island. It was further reßolved to make similar appointments at each, port where vessels trade from Sydney, the Mayor, the Harbourmaster, and tho chairman of the Harbor Board in each case forming tho Local Board of Health. The precaution to be taken in the case of the San Francisco mail steamer, due at Auckland from Sydney to-day, will rest with tha new Board. It is understood, moreover, that the plan adopted will probably be to convey the outward mails to the Quarantine Island, whence tho steamer would fetch them off, at the same time landing her Auckland mails from bydney for fumigation before bein g delivered in town.
